What Was Viking Life Like?

More Than Just Warriors!

Vikings are often shown as fierce fighters sailing in ships—but real Viking life was very different! Most Vikings were not warriors at all. They were farmers, builders, traders, and families trying to survive in a cold and challenging world.

Where Did Vikings Live?

Vikings lived in long wooden houses called longhouses.

  • These homes were made from wood, stone, and grass
  • They had one big room with a fire in the middle
  • Families often shared the space with animals in winter to keep warm

The fire was the heart of the home—it gave heat, light, and a place to cook food.

Viking Families

Family was very important in Viking life.

  • Everyone worked together to survive
  • Children helped from a young age
  • Women ran the home and often managed farms
  • Men farmed, fished, or travelled for trade or raids

Even though men sometimes went on adventures, most of the time they were working at home!

What Jobs Did Vikings Do?

Most Vikings were farmers.

They:

  • Grew crops like barley, oats, and rye
  • Kept animals like cows, sheep, and pigs
  • Fished and hunted
  • Made tools, clothes, and boats

Skilled workers like blacksmiths and shipbuilders were highly respected.

What Did Vikings Eat?

Viking food depended on what they could grow or catch.

They ate:

  • Fish and meat
  • Bread and porridge
  • Vegetables like cabbage and onions
  • Dairy foods like cheese and milk

They also collected berries and stored food to survive long, cold winters.

What Did Vikings Do for Fun?

Life wasn’t all work!

Vikings enjoyed:

  • Storytelling and legends
  • Board games
  • Music and poetry
  • Sports like wrestling

Even tough Vikings liked to relax and have fun!

Viking Society

Viking society had different groups:

  • Jarls – rich leaders
  • Karls – farmers and workers
  • Thralls – slaves

Even with these groups, honour and reputation were very important to Vikings.

Was Viking Life Easy?

Not at all!

Viking life was:

  • Cold and harsh
  • Full of hard work
  • Focused on survival

People had to prepare carefully for winter, or they might not survive.

Vikings did NOT wear horned helmets—that’s just a myth from stories and movies!
