How Is Snow Formed?
Discover the icy magic in every snowflake!

What Is Snow?
Snow is frozen water that falls from the sky. When it’s very cold outside and the clouds are full of moisture, snowflakes begin to form. Snow looks like soft, white flakes that pile up on the ground, trees, and rooftops. How Does Snow Start?
It all begins high up in the clouds. Water vapor (tiny bits of water in the air) rises into the sky. When the temperature in the clouds drops below freezing (0°C or 32°F), the water vapor changes directly into ice crystals instead of rain. This is the very beginning of a snowflake! How Do Snowflakes Grow?
The ice crystals attract more water vapor and grow bigger. They form beautiful patterns and shapes. Every snowflake is unique, just like you! The shape of a snowflake depends on the temperature and how much water is in the air. When Do We See Snow?
When the ice crystals get heavy, they fall from the clouds as snowflakes. If the air all the way down to the ground is still cold, the snowflakes don’t melt and reach us as soft, fluffy snow. That’s when you can build a snowman or make snow angels!Fun Snowflake Fact
Did you know that snowflakes always have six sides? That’s because of the way water molecules freeze into a crystal shape! Thanks for learning with us today!
