Meet Marco Polo
A long time ago, in the year 1254, a boy named Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy. Marco grew up in a family of traders—people who traveled to buy and sell goods like silk and spices.
Marco Polo became one of the most famous travelers in history. He didn’t take airplanes or cars. He rode on camels and boats, and his journey lasted for many years!

Adventure to China
When Marco was 17, he left Venice with his father and uncle on a very long trip to Asia. It took them four years to reach China! They crossed deserts, climbed mountains, and met many different people along the way.
In China, they met a great ruler named Kublai Khan. He liked Marco so much that he gave him important jobs and let him explore even more of China!

Bringing Stories Back Home
Marco Polo returned to Venice 24 years later. People could hardly believe the stories he told—about paper money, fireworks, and huge cities in China. They were amazed!
Marco’s adventures were written down in a book called The Travels of Marco Polo. It inspired other explorers, including Christopher Columbus!

Why Is Marco Polo Important?
Marco Polo helped people in Europe learn about the cultures and wonders of the East. His journey showed that the world was much bigger than people thought. He helped connect countries and people through travel and trade.

The game “Marco Polo” played in swimming pools is named after him—even though Marco Polo never swam to China!
