🌼 What Is a Flower?
A flower is the colorful part of a plant that helps it make seeds. Flowers are not just pretty—they are busy doing important work! Let’s look at the different parts of a flower and what they do.
🌿 The Main Parts of a Flower
1. Petals
Petals are the colorful parts of the flower. They come in all shapes and sizes. Their job is to attract bees and butterflies to help with pollination.
2. Sepals
Sepals are the small, green leaves under the petals. They protect the flower bud before it opens.
3. Stamen
This is the boy part of the flower. It makes pollen. The stamen has two parts:
- Anther – holds the pollen
- Filament – a thin stalk that holds up the anther
4. Carpel (or Pistil)
This is the girl part of the flower. It helps make seeds. The carpel has three main parts:
- Stigma – sticky part at the top that catches pollen
- Style – a tube that connects the stigma to the ovary
- Ovary – holds the ovules (which can turn into seeds!)
5. Stem
The stem holds the flower up and carries water and food from the roots.
🐝 How Do Flowers Make Seeds?
When a bee visits a flower, it carries pollen from one flower to another. This is called pollination. If the pollen reaches the carpel, the flower can make seeds in its ovary. Those seeds can grow into new plants!
📝 Tiny Summary
Flowers are important for making seeds. The petals, sepals, stamen, carpel, and stem all work together to help plants grow. Next time you see a flower, try to spot each part!
