Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen lots of tiny, twinkling stars? Some of those stars form special patterns called constellations. Long ago, people used their imagination to connect the stars and turn them into pictures!

What Is a Constellation?

A constellation is a group of stars that looks like a picture or shape when seen from Earth. People imagined these star patterns as animals, people, or objects and gave them names.

Even though the stars in a constellation look close together, they are actually very far apart in space.


Why Do Constellations Have Names?

Thousands of years ago, people didn’t have maps or GPS. They used the stars to:

  • Find their way when travelling
  • Know when to plant or harvest crops
  • Share stories and legends

Many constellation names come from ancient myths and legends, especially from Greek and Roman times.


Can We Still See Constellations Today?

Yes! We can still see many constellations in the night sky today. Some are easier to spot than others.

Popular constellations include:

  • Orion – looks like a hunter with a belt
  • The Big Dipper – shaped like a giant spoon
  • Leo – looks like a lion

You can spot constellations using your eyes, a telescope, or even a stargazing app.


Do Constellations Change?

Constellations stay in the same patterns, but we don’t see the same ones all year. As Earth moves around the Sun, different constellations appear in different seasons.

That means the night sky in winter looks different from the night sky in summer!
