Why Do We Need to Brush Our Teeth?
Keeping Our Smiles Bright and Healthy!

What’s So Special About Our Teeth?
Our teeth help us bite, chew, and enjoy all the tasty foods we love — from crunchy apples to yummy sandwiches! Teeth also help us speak clearly and show off our brightest smiles. But did you know that tiny germs called bacteria are always trying to live on our teeth?
The Sneaky Sugar Attack!
When we eat or drink sweet things, the bacteria in our mouth turn the sugar into acid. This acid can slowly wear away the hard outer layer of our teeth, called enamel. That’s how holes, or cavities, form!
Brushing your teeth removes food bits and bacteria before they cause trouble. It’s like giving your mouth a superhero shield every morning and night!
What Happens If We Don’t Brush?
If we skip brushing, sticky plaque builds up. Plaque can make your breath smell bad and your gums sore. Over time, it can cause tooth decay or even make teeth fall out — yikes!
How to Brush the Right Way
- Use a pea-sized bit of toothpaste.
- Brush in gentle circles for 2 minutes.
- Don’t forget the back teeth and your tongue!
- Spit, but don’t rinse — that way, the toothpaste can keep protecting your teeth.
- Brush twice a day — morning and before bed.
Visiting the Dentist
Even if you brush well, it’s important to visit the dentist every six months. Dentists can check for hidden cavities and help keep your smile shiny and strong!
Fun Fact!
Sharks never worry about brushing — they grow new teeth throughout their lives. But we only get one set of adult teeth, so it’s up to us to take care of them!
