Obelus (÷)

The obelus (÷) is the mathematical symbol used to show division.

  • Example: 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  • It tells us to split or share numbers into equal parts.

Fun fact: The obelus was first used for division in the 1600s. Today, division is also written with a fraction bar (⁄) or a colon (:) in some countries.

Key Idea: Whenever you see the obelus, it means you need to divide!
