What Is Cotton?
The Soft Plant That Makes Our Clothes

What Is Cotton?
Cotton is a soft, fluffy plant that grows around the seeds of the cotton plant. You might wear cotton every day — in your T-shirt, socks, or even your bedsheets! Cotton is a natural fibre, which means it comes from plants, not from a factory.
Where Does Cotton Grow?
Cotton plants love warm, sunny weather. Farmers grow cotton in countries like India, China, the United States, and Egypt. The cotton plant has green leaves and pretty white or pink flowers that turn into cotton “bolls.” These bolls hold the soft cotton fibres we use to make fabric.
How Is Cotton Made Into Fabric?
When the cotton bolls are ready, farmers pick them — sometimes by hand and sometimes with machines. The cotton is then cleaned to remove seeds and dirt. After that, the fluffy fibres are spun into long threads, which are woven or knitted into fabric. That’s how cotton becomes the soft clothes and items we use every day!
Why Is Cotton So Popular?
Cotton is loved all over the world because it’s soft, breathable, and comfortable. It keeps us cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Cotton fabric also absorbs water, which is why it’s used in towels and socks.
