The Maths Definition of Jump Strategy

In mathematics, particularly in primary education, the jump strategy is a method used to solve addition and subtraction problems by breaking numbers into manageable parts. It is often taught on a number line, where the learner “jumps” in steps to reach the answer.

For example, to calculate 37 + 25, a student might start at 37 and first jump 20 to reach 57, then jump 5 more to reach 62. This approach helps children visualize place value and understand how numbers can be partitioned into tens and ones.

The jump strategy is valuable because it strengthens number sense, encourages flexible thinking, and makes mental arithmetic easier. It is commonly introduced in early primary years as a foundation for more advanced problem-solving skills.
