Listen on audio

What Is a Giraffe?

A giraffe is a tall, long-necked animal that lives in Africa. Giraffes are mammals, which means they have fur and drink milk when they are babies. They are the tallest animals that live on land!

How Tall Can a Giraffe Grow?

Giraffes can grow up to 6 metres tall — that’s taller than most houses! Their long legs and super-long necks help them reach leaves high up in trees.

What Do Giraffes Eat?

Giraffes are herbivores. That means they only eat plants. Their favourite food is the leaves from the acacia tree. They use their long tongues (up to 45 cm!) to grab tasty leaves.

Do Giraffes Sleep Standing Up?

Yes, sometimes they do! Giraffes often sleep while standing, especially when they’re keeping watch for predators. But sometimes, they lie down and curl their necks around their bodies for a nap.

Why Do Giraffes Have Spots?

Giraffe spots aren’t just for looking cool — they help giraffes blend into the trees and grass. Every giraffe has a unique pattern, just like human fingerprints!

Fun Fact!

Did you know a giraffe’s heart is huge? It weighs about 11 kilograms and helps pump blood all the way up to its head!
