What is a shooting star?
A shooting star isn’t really a star at all! It’s a tiny bit of space rock or dust that burns up when it zooms into Earth’s atmosphere. It goes so fast that it gets super hot and glows brightly in the night sky. That glowing streak is what we call a **shooting star**!Where do they come from?
Shooting stars come from outer space. They’re often pieces of comets or asteroids. When Earth travels through dusty trails left by comets, we get lots of shooting stars — this is called a **meteor shower**!Are they dangerous?
Nope! Most shooting stars are very small — smaller than a pebble — and they burn up completely before they can reach the ground. So they’re safe and fun to watch. Can I wish on a shooting star?
Yes! People have been wishing on shooting stars for hundreds of years. Even though it’s just a bit of space dust, it still feels magical. So go ahead and make a wish!Fun Fact
If a piece of a shooting star makes it all the way to Earth without burning up, it’s called a **meteorite**!Now You Know!
