What Happens to Trees in Autumn?

In autumn, the days get shorter and the weather becomes cooler. Trees notice these changes! They prepare for winter by slowing down their food-making process, which is called photosynthesis. Trees don’t need as many leaves in the cold months when there’s less sunlight.

Why Do Leaves Change Colour?

Leaves are green in spring and summer because they contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that helps them make food from sunlight. In autumn, chlorophyll fades away, and other beautiful colours like red, orange, and yellow start to appear. These colours were always there, but hidden by the green!

Why Do Leaves Fall Off?

Falling leaves help trees survive! When it’s cold and there’s less sunlight, trees save energy by letting their leaves go. A special layer forms where the leaf joins the tree, and this layer slowly cuts the leaf off. Then—whoosh!—the leaf falls gently to the ground.

Do All Trees Lose Their Leaves?

Nope! Some trees, like pines and firs, are evergreens. They keep their needle-like leaves all year round. But deciduous trees, like oaks and maples, lose their leaves every autumn and grow new ones in spring.

Now You Know!
Isn’t it amazing how trees get ready for winter? From changing colours to letting their leaves fall, nature has a clever plan! Next time you’re outside in autumn, see if you can spot a deciduous tree saying goodbye to its leaves. 🍁 Keep exploring, little champion! 🍂
