What Is a Rainbow?

A rainbow is a colorful arc that appears in the sky when sunlight shines through rain. It looks like magic, but it’s actually science!

When light from the sun passes through tiny water droplets in the air, it bends (this is called refraction), bounces inside the droplet (called reflection), and then bends again as it comes out. This special trick splits the sunlight into many colors—and that’s how we get a rainbow!

How Many Colors Are in a Rainbow?

There are seven main colors in a rainbow. You can remember them with this fun name: ROYGBIV

  • Red
  • Orange
  • Yellow
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Indigo
  • Violet

When Can You See a Rainbow?

Rainbows often appear after it rains while the sun is still shining. You need two things:

  1. Raindrops in the air
  2. Sunlight shining from behind you

Are All Rainbows the Same?

Nope! There are even double rainbows, where you can see two arcs at once. Sometimes, there are moonbows (rainbows made by moonlight) or even fogbows (rainbows made from fog). Nature is amazing!

Little Fact:

Did you know? You can never reach the end of a rainbow—it moves as you move!

Rainbows remind us that science can be magical!
