What Do Plants Need to Grow?
Helping our green friends grow big and strong!

🌞 Sunlight – The Plant’s Food Maker
Plants love the sun!
Sunlight gives plants the energy they need to make their own food in a process called photosynthesis (say it like this: foe-toe-sin-thuh-sis). Without sunshine, most plants would not grow properly.
🌻 Fun Fact: Sunflowers love the sun so much, they turn their heads to follow it across the sky!
💧 Water – A Plant’s Drink
Just like people and animals, plants need water to stay alive.
Water travels up through the plant’s roots and carries nutrients (plant food) to every part. If a plant doesn’t get enough water, it may wilt or dry up.
🪴 Try This: Water one plant and leave another one dry—see what happens after a few days!
🌍 Soil – A Plant’s Home
Plants grow best in healthy soil.
Soil holds the roots and gives plants important nutrients to help them grow big and strong. Good soil is dark, crumbly, and full of life like worms and tiny bugs.
🐛 Did You Know? Worms are great helpers! They dig tunnels and make the soil better for roots.
🌬️ Air – A Plant’s Breath
Plants need carbon dioxide, a gas found in the air.
They breathe it in through tiny holes in their leaves. In return, they give us oxygen—the air we breathe!

🧤 Extra Help – Love and Care
Some plants need a little extra help:
- 🌡️ Warmth (they don’t like the cold!)
- 🌿 Space to grow
- 🌧️ The right amount of water—not too much, not too little
With love and care, a tiny seed can grow into a giant tree!
