The Bright and Brilliant Sun!

What is the Sun?

Have you ever looked up at the sky on a sunny day and felt its warm rays on your face? That’s the Sun! The Sun is a huge ball of glowing gases. It’s much, much bigger than the Earth — about 1 million Earths could fit inside it! Even though it looks small in the sky, that’s only because it is so far away from us, about 93 million miles (150 million kilometers)!

The Sun gives us light and warmth, which plants, animals, and people need to live. Without the Sun, our planet would be a dark, freezing place.

How Does the Sun Work?

The Sun is like a giant engine. Inside, it’s incredibly hot — much hotter than any fire here on Earth! It creates energy through a process called nuclear fusion. This means that tiny particles called atoms crash into each other and release lots of heat and light.

This energy travels across space and reaches us here on Earth. It lights up our days and helps plants grow by giving them the energy they need to make food.

Why Is the Sun Important?

The Sun does many important jobs:

Gives us light so we can see during the day. Keeps us warm so life can exist. Helps plants grow, which gives animals and people food. Controls the seasons by shining more or less on different parts of the Earth throughout the year.

Without the Sun, Earth would be a frozen, lifeless planet floating in space!

Fun Facts About the Sun

The Sun is a star — just like the stars you see at night! It’s the closest star to Earth. It takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to travel to Earth. The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old! One day, far in the future, the Sun will change and become a giant red star.
